Not all is well in the RSS world.
When 10% of the world's RSS feeds are not well-formed -including some high-profile feeds that thousands of people want to read- the ability to parse ill-formed feeds becomes a competitive advantage.
Mark Pilgrim, the author of above quote, suggests a heretical solution to solve the problem of non-valid RSS feeds. Here's the article, and here are his additional comments.
To make things simple, Mark provides us with an ultra-liberal feed parser.
